Rabbis: Medical marijuana kosher on shmita year

Religious Zionism leaders say patients can continue consuming cannabis during year in which land in Israel must lie fallow.

An unusual halachic issue was placed on the table of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate recently: Is it permitted to consume marijuana on a shmita year – the seventh year in a seven-year cycle during which land in Israel must lie fallow.

The issue does not just apply to drug smokers, but mainly to patients in need of medical cannabis.

“I receive grass as a medication,” explained M., a religious man who suffers from shell shock, in a letter to the Rabbinate. “The shmita year will begin in four months, and observant IDF disabled veterans have been asking themselves whether the grass should be grown differently like fruits and vegetables.”

There are several methods to maintain the kashrut of fruits and vegetables which are halachically forbidden during the shmita year, but what about marijuana?

The question was referred to rabbis in the Religious Zionism movement, and most of them replied that because it is used as a medication and not as food, patients can continue consuming the plant….

When you think about a college degree you think of things like economics, communications or poli sci. But a group of students in Tampa is learning something that right now is actually illegal to do in the State of Florida.

They’re learning how to cultivate marijuana.

Voters in November will decide whether to approve medical marijuana, and while supporters are touting the health benefits, others are looking at ways to capitalize on the issue.

There are 15 adults in the Medical Marijuana Tampa program – aka “Cannabis College.”

If you’ve got $500 and 16 hours to spare, you can learn the basics of medical marijuana.

The learning doesn’t just take place here in the classroom. Medical Marijuana Tampa has also set up a garden here where students work. It’s still illegal to grow marijuana in Florida, so for now students practice on tomato plants.

“I’ve actually treated people with cannabis with good results,” senior professor Carlos Hermida said.

Hermida says his passion for prescription pot took him to California, where he worked at several clinics. Now he shares his expertise with budding pot experts like Pedro Cati.

“It’s a new industry and I see an opportunity, not just for money, but also for business, you know, to help people,” Cati said.

Some experts predict medical marijuana could grow to be a billion dollar industry in Florida….

GEONOVUS MINERALS CORP. CA:GNM +12.50% (“GeoNovus” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that management is currently reviewing a number of business plans and proposals related to international medical marijuana and industrial hemp industries.

This emerging multibillion-dollar industry is in the process of significant regulatory and legal reform that offers participants an explosive growth opportunity. Recent changes in Canadian medical marijuana licensing could allow for licensed producers (LPs) to grow on a larger, commercial scale with the introduction of the new MMPR licenses. The industrial hemp industry is also currently undergoing significant reform with more and more agricultural land zoned for growing industrial hemp year over year.

“We feel it is incumbent that we, as management, look at any and all potential opportunities to create shareholder value,” states GeoNovus president Mike England.

South of the border marijuana is now legal in Colorado and Washington and tourism is booming. The ArcView Group, an investing and market research firm for high-net-worth investors based in San Francisco, estimates the US national legal market (including recreational and medical marijuana) at $1.53-billion in 2013 and expects it to grow to $2.57-billion by the end of 2014, with marijuana sales in Washington and Colorado pulling in $316-million and $802-million, respectively. ArcView says the national market could reach $10.2-billion in five years.

“Conservative’ Group Begins Pushing for Medical Marijuana in Texas

WIN!

A conservative group says it will begin pushing hard for the legalization of marijuana for medical use in Texas, 1200 WOAI’s Berit Mason reports.

Mothers Advocating Medical Marijuana for Autism, or MAMMA, says the group will be urging lawmakers in the sessions that begins in January to push for revisions in state law to allow marijuana to be used as a treatment, especially for sick children who suffer from the seizures associated with autism.

“Some of the parents are giving the juice of the plant in a liquid form,” MAMMA’s Talia Michelle told 1200 WOAI news. “After just a drop, the child is calming, and a lot less aggressive.”

She says marijuana and the active ingredient, THC, is a lot better for children than the chemical drugs which are often prescribed by doctors.

“We’re not talking about smoking reefer or getting in with bong hits,” she said. “We are talking about a completely organic medicine which is proven to help children with seizure disorders and children with cancer.”

Canada welcomes first cannabis vending machine in Vancouver

Canada has followed in the footsteps of its US neighbour by installing its first vending machine for medical marijuana in the city of Vancouver.

The machine has been installed in a local dispensary known as the BC Pain Society who boast that it features “Purple Kush, Bubba Kush, sativa and indica strains of medical marijuana”.

A video uploaded on YouTube by the dispensary shows that unlike a similar machine installed in Coloarado last month, there’s no built-in system to identify the buyer, with users simply feeding in the necessary money and selecting their product of choice….

Colorado group to offer war vets with debilitating injuries free marijuana

WIN!

DENVER — War veterans in Colorado now have access to free marijuana.  The Grow4Vets organization is launching a program that will provide them with smokable and edible pot.  All of that access comes with a new health warning though, doctors want vets and anyone else who uses marijuana to make sure they let their health care provider know before being prescribed any medications.

A growing number of war veterans say marijuana can ease the pain of injuries and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)  many develop after serving their country.   In an interview with FOX31 Denver News  Iraq war veteran Sean Azzariti explained what it’s like to live with PTSD.   “It’s a crippling thing to take over, and cannabis,  it helps.”

Those in Colorado are happy to have access to legal marijuana.  Operation Grow4Vets will offer free marijuana, along with equipment to grow the plants as a  way to get around medical marijuana requirements that have restricted veterans in the past.

Marijuana Refugees: Virginia Family Moves to Colorado to Treat Epileptic Child with Cannabis Oil

WIN!

Last year, Dara Lightle and her nine-year-old daughter, Madeleine, became “marijuana refugees” when they moved from Virginia to Colorado. At the time, Madeleine was suffering from hundreds of seizures a day. Her doctors in Virginia recommended brain surgery. Then Dara heard how cannabis oil had treated children suffering from similar conditions. The oil worked. But since the oil was considered an illegal drug in much of the country, they had to move to Colorado, where it is legal, to continue treatment. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, at least 115 “marijuana refugee families” from 43 states have left jobs, homes and family so they could obtain the cannabis oil to treat a variety of ailments. We speak to Dara and Madeleine in Denver.
