Excerpts from an interview

The Indian Republic. Tell us a bit about your childhood.

Sufi M.K. Chisty: I was born in the small town of Atodara in Surat, Gujarat. My forefathers were respected Sufi saints and used to spread the message of brotherhood, peace and harmony among all communities.

I did my early education in Surat and had dreams of going to America and complete my higher education. However, fate had different plans for me. When I was about 10 years old, I lost my mother, who I was very close to. I somehow managed my life after that, when tragedy struck a few years later again. My father too expired when I was 19 years of age and three years after this, I lost my elder brother in an accident; after which my life completely changed.

My forefathers had predicted that my mother’s son would go on to be the next Sufi saint. Though everyone thought that it would be my brother, but after his death, I got the mantle. Although I did complete my B.Sc in Electronics with distinction from South Gujarat University, I have been happily leading my life as a Sufi saint ever since.
